One of the fundamental elements of good school estates management schools is to meet health and safety and statutory compliance requirements. Those with duties for health and safety in schools should make sure that the policies, procedures and condition of their school estate is compliant with relevant legislation.

The employer or, in the case of schools, the proprietor, is accountable for the health and safety of school staff and pupils. The day-to-day running of the school is usually delegated to the headteacher and the school management team. In most cases, they are responsible for ensuring that risks are managed effectively. The employer/ proprietor ultimately retain overall accountability and responsibility no matter who carries out the day to day tasks.
