Webinar: 25th November 2026, 1pm-2pm

Climate resilience strategy - protecting schools from hot weather

Join us for a two-part session focussing on climate resilience strategy for schools and practical steps to protect schools specifically from hot weather.

Part 1: Climate Resilience in Schools – Paul Edmond (Heart Academies Trust / UKSSN)

Schools are already experiencing the impacts of climate change through extreme heat, flooding, storm damage and a variety of other disruptions to learning.

This session will explore how school and trust leaders can develop a practical climate resilience strategy by applying familiar risk management principles. Drawing on approaches used in governance, finance and organisational resilience, the presentation will examine how leaders can identify climate-related threats, assess their likelihood and impact, and prioritise action within finite resources.

The session will introduce a simple framework for measuring climate risk. Participants will learn how to move beyond anecdotal concerns and use evidence, risk appetite and assurance processes to determine where action is most needed. Rather than attempting to solve every climate challenge at once, the talk will focus on how leaders can understand their greatest vulnerabilities, define acceptable levels of risk, and embed climate resilience into existing strategic planning and risk management processes.

Key themes:

  • Climate change as an organisational risk, not just an estates issue
  • Identifying and measuring climate threats
  • Risk appetite, assurance and governance
  • Prioritising action with limited resources

Part 2: Protecting Schools in Hot Weather – Shreya Kapur (Shade the UK)

Many schools are no longer designed for the temperatures they now experience, which presents severe challenges for learning, safeguarding, and operational resilience.

This session will cover the varied ways that hot weather can impact schools and identify measures that are available to keep students, staff, and visitors safe. The discussions will recognise the diversity of different education buildings and estates and how to work across different budgets.

By the end of the session, the aim is for participants to be better informed about practical steps that:

  • Improve thermal comfort and safety
  • Safeguard more heat vulnerable students and staff
  • Limit education and financial disruptions
  • Reduce reliance on expensive air conditioning and help reach net-zero carbon goals
